REVIEW: Shock Heir for the Crown Prince by Kelly Hunter
I hadn’t read a Kelly Hunter Presents before, but her debut Modern Heat (Tempted?)/Presents Extra is on my keeper shelf.
The opening prologue’s sexy tone was a bit off-putting, possibly because I hadn’t bonded with the hero yet? Because it promises Modern Heat/Tempted/Presents Extra-sexy rather than Presents? I can see why the writer did it. There’s no hero-heroine interaction, a lot of backstory/set-up and it’s a way of creating tension.
The first meet builds on the story foundations, but lacks fun dialogue or the passion and drama that I especially love in reunion stories. The heroine lying to her daughter SPOILER that her father had died END OF SPOILER and snapping at the servants for unpacking, however understandable when your world's been turned upside down, didn't help.
If the prologue sets a sexy tone, then the suspense plot (SPOILER security teams around the house, kidnapping of hero’s sister and the staking out of the heroine and his daughter END OF SPOILER) maybe sets expectations a bit too strongly that this is going to be a suspense read.
Halfway - lots of Casamir-Ana interaction and it's great that their conflict is out in the open and talked about, and I liked the heroine more here. Having lots of dialogue is fab. There are also lots of conversations with secondaries, making their world more rounded, but diluting relationship intensity.
Great dialogue, above-the-surface stuff, secondary characters, and plot. But doesn't quite fit the lovely gilded Presents frame where I'd have liked more focus on the beneath the surface stuff.
2.5 Harlequin Presents stars
I purchased this book from the M&B website to read on my laptop, but also downloaded it when it became available via NetGalley/Mills & Boon Insiders so that I could read it on my Kindle at the bus stop.
